Vinyl gloves are made from PVC (Poly Vinyl Chloride) granules, one of the most widely used plastics, and (mostly phthalates). In its pure form, PVC is rigid, while when mixed with phthalates it becomes flexible and malleable.
Vinyl gloves comply with the regulations regarding plastic materials (both as Medical Devices that as products intended for thefood use), unlike the Latex gloves And Nitrile Gloves that comply with tire regulations. Although the development of this glove was mainly favored by the absence of rubber latex, the economic aspect was fundamental for its widespread use.
The mechanical resistance, compared to latex and nitrile, is lower due to the poor molecular cohesion and therefore the glove, in addition to being less elastic, is more prone to breakages and micro-lesions and less suitable for performances subject to risks, especially biological ones. Vinyl gloves produced with phthalates, classified by REACH, can also be used for food contact (Dir. 2004/195/EEC) with the exception of fatty and alcoholic foods as phthalates tend to migrate quickly.
